Lucas and Balotelli Face Fitness Tests Ahead of Manchester United Clash

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers was handed a fitness boost earlier in the week with Brazilian midfielder Lucas returning to full training and in his pre-match press conference ahead of this weekends meeting with Manchester United, the Reds manager confirmed he’d be assessed to see if he can play a part.
“Lucas Leiva is back, which is great,” explained the Northern Irishman to the assembled press at Melwood. “We’ll assess him tomorrow and see where he’s at.” The 28-year old, who has been sidelined with an adductor since making a hasty departure during the opening stages of the Merseyside Derby at the beginning of February, may not be quite match fit quite yet, but with the Reds fighting for a top four spot and a FA Cup semi-final berth, he’ll be a welcome addition to a squad that will need some rotating in the weeks to come.
Along with Lucas, Rodgers also confirmed that Mario Balotelli has rejoined training after illness once again sidelined the Italian striker. With questions being raised regarding the fitness of Daniel Sturridge, the 24-year old could very well see a return to action when the Red Devils visit at the weekend.
“He was ill and been off for nine days. He has just started to train in the last couple of days, but he is feeling much better” explained the Reds boss when asked about Balotelli’s fitness. “One or two other players are returning, so the squad is strong and in good condition.”
