Firmino with a goal and assist chalked off as Brazil fail to beat Venezuela

Majority of the Liverpool players are enjoying their time off from football but our front three are on international duty.

The likes of Mane and Salah are going to take part in the African Cup of Nations. The competition will kick start on Friday in Egypt.

On the other hand, Roberto Firmino has so far started for Brazil in both their Copa America fixtures. In the opening game, the Liverpool forward provided an assist to help the Samba stars earn all three points vs Bolivia.

However, last night, the former Hoffenheim star was unlucky vs Venezuela. Firmino had a goal and an assist chalked off and the game ended in a 0-0 stalemate.

Late in the first half, Alves provided a cross into the box from which Firmino slotted the ball in the net. However, the referee judged that the Brazilian striker fouled Villanueva and therefore, the goal was disallowed.

In the 61st minute of the game, Gabriel Jesus’s shot taken from the corner of the penalty area was blocked and fell into the path of Firmino. The Liverpool striker passed the ball to the edge of the box for the charging Man City striker, who turned it home. Unfortunately, after a lengthy VAR review by the ref, it was deemed that Firmino was offside and hence, the goal was chalked off.

In the 87th minute, former Liverpool playmaker Coutinho thought that he had finally won the game for the five-time World champions but once again VAR intervened and the goal was disallowed.

Brazil are currently on top of their group and the hosts only need a single point in their final game vs Peru to qualify for the quarter finals.
