Fabio Borini Set for £14mil Sunderland Switch

Trading a red bird for a black cat?

Sunderland manager Gus Poyet has made no secret of his desire to bring Fabio Borini back to the Stadium of Light on a permanent basis and it’s looking like he’s going to get his wish with strong suggestions emerging in the media that the two sides have worked out a deal that could rise to £14mil in the coming years.

With the Black Cats set to pay an initial fee of £12mil for the promising youngster, Liverpool are making in the very least a modest return on the £10.5 million they paid AS Roma for his services two years ago, and should the Italian tick all the boxes to see the fee swell to full price, it has to be said that it’s a tidy bit of business by the Reds transfer committee. With QPR striker Loic Remy looking likely to take up the Italian’s place in the next few days, that tidy bit of business is starting to look like a downright steal considering the 27-year old Frenchman will be arriving for less than Borini will be departing for.

After scoring 10-goals — including strikes in both meetings with Newcastle last year — the Italian became a bit of a cult hero on Wearside and was named the clubs Young Player of the Year. Although he looked to play down rumours of a permanent move and continually stated his desire to remain and fight for a his place at Anfield, it’s now looking like he’ll be the second striker to leave Liverpool this season with Luis Suarez making a big money move to Spanish giants Barcelona earlier in the month.

Should the Italian depart, that will only add fuel to the Remy to Liverpool fire with the Frenchman set to be Reds boss Brendan Rodgers fifth signing — and second striker — of the summer. The Northern Irishman, who doesn’t look like slowing down in the transfer market any time soon, has already brought in Southampton duo Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana along with Bayerleverkusen midfielder Emre Can and Benfica winger Lazar Markovic.

With the sale of Borini, and potentially Oussama Assaidi to Stoke City, Rodgers will see his transfer coffers swell even more as he tries to assemble a side that”ll compete at a high level both domestically and in Europe. It has to said that it’s exciting times on Merseyside right now…
