With the PFA Player of the Year and Football Writers Association Player of the Year awards in the bag, there’s little doubt that Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has been the best player in the Premier League this season. In their end of the season review, a panel of Sky Sports pundits — including former Reds defender Jamie Carragher — discussed the Uruguayans impact on the Reds run for the title and what they’ll need to do next year to insure that he stays on Merseyside.

With 31-goals and 12-assists to his name, Suarez was lighting up defenders left and right this season, but that’s not the whole story. Following a series of high profile incidents, the striker showed a much calmer side this season and reaped his rewards for it — something that impressed former Manchester United fullback Gary Neville. The pundit was quite impressed with Suarez’s growth on the field, commenting that his game “lacked maturity and decision making” when he first saw him two years ago.

The Patrice Evra racism row, flipping off Fulham fans and biting Branislav Ivanovic all boiled up to the Uruguayan demanding a transfer last summer with a lack of Champions League football making him re-consider his time on Merseyside. Well, with a return to Europe’s biggest club competition secured and a new contract tieing him down to the Anfield club, Suarez doesn’t look to be going anywhere fast, but Carragher believes that that Liverpool would have a “fight on” to qualify for the top four if he does jump ship.

Calling him “fantastically suited to the Premier League”, the Reds legend believes that the 27-year old may struggle to adapt to the slower style of play in Spain, but concedes that a player of his calibre “should’t just be playing in the Champions League, but winning it” and that should Brendan Rodgers side fail to make progress on the continent, his want-away eyes will take a wander again.
