Gerrard Confirmed MK Dons Talks, Admits Job Offer Came “Too Soon”

After confirming his departure from Major League Soccer side LA Galaxy last week, Liverpool fans around the globe were handed a bit of a shock when instead of opening up the paper to see that Reds legend Steven Gerrard would be taking up a post at Anfield that he was in talks with League One side MK Dons to become their new manager.

With the likes of Scottish champions Celtic, Championship pace-setters Newcastle United and the storied Serie A outfit Inter Milan all looking to get him back on the pitch as soon as possible, punters around the globe doubled down on the surprise at hearing the 36-year old was considering jumping straight in to management — something that, in the end, never did happen.

“I’m just taking a bit of time to consider what’s next, exciting times moving forward,” Gerrard told the Liverpool ECHO. “I spoke to MK Dons,” confirmed the Liverpool legend. “I had a chat with the chairman, it’s a very exciting job for somebody else but it’s a bit soon for me,” added the former England captain. “But it’s true, I did speak to them.”

Currently pursuing his UEFA A Level License, Gerrard has made no secret of his desire to go in to management in the future and Liverpool, in turn, have made no secret of the fact that he’s always welcome at the club with suggestions that he could either act as an assistant in some capacity to incumbent Reds boss Jurgen Klopp or even take up a role in the academy as he looks to gain the practical experience a top class manager needs to make it in the game. While the Dons job may have been fantastic leap forward for him, considering his relative lack of management experience, it could have just as easily ended in disaster.
