Alberto Moreno Sets His Sights on Contributing More

More than five of each

Although he’s had a bit of a tough go at the back since joining Liverpool from Spanish side Sevilla over the summer, Reds fullback Alberto Moreno has looked electric going forward with his stunning solo effort against Tottenham Hotspur at the end of August standing as a goal of the season contender.

Ahead of Liverpool’s return to Premier League action against Crystal Palace  on Sunday, the 22-year has revealed that he has a natural instinct to go forward and will be looking to that it to contribute more in front of the net.  “All players love to score goals, especially me, because when I was younger I used to score regularly as I played further forward back then,” the defender told the clubs official website. “When I was a kid I played more as a winger or a wide attacking midfielder – not as a full-back. But I always like to score goals and above all, provide assists, which is what an attacking full-back has to do.”

With striker Daniel Sturridge ruled out for an additional six weeks after suffering a setback on his road to recovery, Rodgers will be looking for other players in the side to step it up. Going into this weekends return to Selhurst Park, besides the injured 24-year old, there isn’t one striker in the Liverpool line-up with a Premier League goal this season — a massive problem for the Anfield outfit.

The Reds may be going through a barren spell in front of the net, but Moreno is looking to help change that by not only scoring a few more himself, but helping to create them as well. “As we stand, I’m on one goal and an assist in 12 games, so I think I’m aiming at getting more than five goals and five assists” continued the Liverpool new-boy. “When we are about to go out, he always says to me to get forward and attack as much as I can but to be aware that as a full-back that I have to defend as well. The fundamental job of a defender is to defend, but at the first opportunity I should get forward and create problems further up the pitch.”
