Steven Caulker Joins Liverpool on Loan from Queens Park Rangers

With Liverpool firmly in the grip of an injury crisis, it comes as little surprise that the club have dipped in to the transfer market, but the news that they’ve taken Queens Park Rangers defender Steven Caulker, who has had his loan agreement with Southampton cancelled, to Anfield comes with a raised eyebrow or two with the 24-year old looking likely to be thrown into the fray straight off with Arsenal set to visit Merseyside later today.

“Yeah, they don’t come much bigger than that,” said the big Englishman on the prospect of facing the Gunners in his first Reds outing. “It’s an exciting game and one every kid dreams of playing in,” he told the clubs official website after the deal was ratified. “If I get the opportunity tomorrow then I’ll be raring to go and looking forward to it.”

Liverpool have been linked with a number of central defenders to help alleviate boss Jurgen Klopp’s selection problems with Borussia Dortmund man Neven Subotic, who the German outfit confirmed they weren’t willing to part with right now, and former Inter Milan captain Andrea Ranocchia, who has generated a lot of interest from fellow Serie A clubs, apparently at the front of the queue. With Caulker now in the mix, the Reds boss in unlikely to continue looking for defensive reinforcements with the ex-Cardiff man hinting that his time on loan at Anfield could turn into a permanent arrangement.

“The manager has been very positive,” he said of Klopp. “He’s welcomed me and said that there has obviously been a few injuries and so there was an opportunity for me to come here and play. He said if I come here and do well then who knows what the future holds?,” continued Caulker. “It’s an exciting one for me and I am just raring to go now.”
