Fabio Borini Likely to Stay at Anfield

Staying put?

After a successful loan spell at the Stadium of Light, Sunderland have made no mystery of their desire to either extend Fabio Borini’s stay on Weirside or work towards a permanent deal, but recent quotes from the Italian strikers agent suggest that the 23-year old will spend the next season on Merseyside.

With ten goals and three assists in all competitions last year, Borini was a major player in Sunderland boss Gus Poyet’s side as the Black Cats marched to the League Cup final and pulled off a dramatic escape from what looked to be certain relegation. The Italian had a knack of popping up with crucial goals in big games for the Weirside outfit, but with Brendan Rodgers needing all hands on deck as he looks to navigate a season with Champions League commitments, Poyet may have to look elsewhere to replace the budding striker.

“I have read that people are talking about Sunderland trying to sign Borini permanently and I know for certain there is interest and not just from them,” said his agent Marco De Marchi. “I have not spoken to Brendan Rodgers yet but the player is tied to Liverpool by contract for another two years and at the moment I don’t see that he could leave. Anyone who wants Borini will have to talk to Liverpool but I know he would like to continue his Premier League adventure because it’s a style of football that suits him perfectly.”

Rodgers has continually suggested that Borini — a player he signed for £11mil in his first season in charge — has a future on Merseyside, but the prolific partnership of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge is likely to relegate the Italian to a bit-role at Anfield should he stick around. With the Reds boss certain to dip into the transfer market for re-enforcements this summer, the 23-year old could very well be farmed out or even sold if the Reds bosses praise for the talented attacker aren’t quite as sincere as they sound.

Anyone remember all the nice things he said about Andy Carroll?
