These warm up matches don’t always go the way you planned, do they? In their first meeting of what’s set to be a busy summer, Liverpool came up short in Denmark as goals on either side of the half resigned the Reds to their first defeat of their pre-season program.
Brondby midfielder Christian Norgaard capitalized on a defensive error midway through the first half to send the home fans into raptures with a perfectly placed finish in the top corner, but their lead didn’t last long with substitute Jordan Ibe showing a bit of skill to break through the Danish defense and put the ball on a plate for fellow newcomer Kristoffer Peterson.
Although they looked to be heading for a stalemate, Ferhan Hasani snatched the win with two minutes left to play after he fended off several challenges before unleashing a pile-driver of a shot to resign the Reds to defeat. Despite the slow start to their pre-season campaign, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers took a number of positives from seeing his young squad in action.
“This year, we know it’s going to be extremely competitive. Every team will strengthen and we’ll be exactly the same” he said following in the match. “But the beauty for us is that we’re a young group and we’re bringing in young players that are hungry. “We will progress again from last season. It’s going to be a really exciting season. I’ve seen development in the players already in the short period of time that we’ve been back. This season we have the belief to go along with the quality.”
Next up for Liverpool is a trip to Deepdale and a clash with Preston North End before they visit America on a pre-season tour that will see them face off against AS Roma at Boston’s Fenway Park along with a number of high profile clashes in the Guinness International Champions Cup.
