Rodgers Isn’t Keen on Parting With Agger

After captaining the side to a 2-1 defeat to his old side Brondby yesterday, Daniel Agger’s future looked just as much in question as it had all year.

A number of injuries prevented the Dane from getting a consistent run in the side as Liverpool finished runners-up to Manchester City and earned a spot in the Champions League for the first time since 2009. The resurgence of Martin Skrtel and the emergence of promising French international Mamadou Sakho at Anfield meant that even when fit, the newly minted vice-captain often had to settle for a spot on the bench. Despite that, Reds boss Brendan Rodgers isn’t keen on letting the defender leave this summer and he was quick to let everyone know that.

“Agger is one of the best players we have. He has been unlucky because he has been plagued by injuries last season,” the Northern Irishman told the press following his side’s pre-season defeat. “He is a good player, he is experienced and we can use that in the upcoming season. “Daniel has signed a contract with us [which expires in June 2016] and he showed in the first half, what an excellent player he is.”

The Reds have been linked with Southampton defender Dejan Lovren and have seen a £20mil bid for the Croatian hard-man rejected as new Saint’s boss Ronald Koeman tries to prevent a mass exodus from the South Coast side. Although there’s still a long way to go in the transfer window, it looks like there’s still hope of Agger being here come the new season. Considering the wages he’s on, it’ll be interesting to see whether or not him being here equates to him being on the field a bit more…
