Liverpool looked to keep the pre-season momentum they gained last Saturday in the 2-1 win against Preston North End at Deepdale, but an injury time goal from Marco Borriello saw AS Roma come out on top at Fenway Park for the second time on the hop.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers and counterpart Rudi García both named strong line-ups as the two sides work towards full fitness for the coming season. Chances were few and far between in the opening exchanges with the Anfield outfit — who had principal owner John W. Henry watching from the stands — seemed to be the livelier of the two, creating chances through a Philippe Coutinho free-kick and summer signing Rickie Lambert.

An early injury to Fabio Borini meant that another new arrival Emre Can was introduced to the fray earlier than expected, but the youngster stepped up admirably showing some intelligent running and a relative comfort on the ball that few his age possess. Lambert and Kris Peterson both spurned chances to send what essentially amounted to the home side ahead as the second half wore on, but just as it looked like we were heading for a draw, Borriello beat his man from a corner to deflect in a shot off an unfortunate Daniel Agger and hand the Italians the win.

Liverpool’s set to follow up their match at Fenway Park with clashes against Olymipacos, Manchester City and AC Milan in the Guinness International Champions Cup before returning home to face German side Borussia Dortmund at Anfield one week before the season kicks off.

Agger conceding that goal shows why Lovern makes sense.

It was a bad deflection — don’t think it was much more than that.

I mean it in the sense that other then Sakho all our CB’s made lots of little mistakes that lead to goals.

Toure showed with his mistakes that he can not play at LCB and Agger only finally seemed to fill his potential at the end of the season… At the start of the season he made lots of mistakes. As for Skirt… even if we forgot about his mistakes is passing slows down our build up play.
