Glen Johnson Remains Calm over Reds Contract Talks

With a spell on the sidelines through injury almost a certainty for Liverpool fullback Glen Johnson, the 30-year old will have a lot of time to think about his future with talks over a new deal at Anfield stalled.

It’s believed that the Reds wanted to extend the experienced defender’s contract, but on a reduced wage — something Johnson doesn’t appear willing to compromise on. The fullback, who has been at the Merseyside club since moving from Portsmouth back in the summer of 2009, is one of the Reds highest earns with a wage reportedly hovering around the £110,000 per week mark. As of late, his form has hardly justified that exorbitant amount which has left the two sides at a stalemate.

Despite having less than 12-months remaining on his current deal, Johnson says he’s remaining calm over his future and focusing on the here and now rather than worrying about what’s to come. “There are no talks going on with the club at the moment but I’m very relaxed about the situation with my contract,” said the defender. “At the minute I’m playing for Liverpool and I’m happy here. I’m more than willing to stay. I’ve loved playing my football here and day one but obviously I can only talk to the club about it when they want to speak to me.”

After picking up a thigh injury during the Reds 3-1 loss to Manchester City on Monday, new boy Javier Manquillo could get a chance to impress when they face off against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. The 20-year old, who came in on a 2-year loan deal from Atletico Madrid last month, impressed during Liverpool’s opening day fixture against Southampton, but was ommitted from the side that lost out to the Citizens earlier this week.
