Brendan Rodgers Retains FSG Backing as the Vultures Circle

Still the boss

Although his position in charge of Liverpool remains precarious at best, Reds boss Brendan Rodgers has revealed that he’s retained the backing of ownership group Fenway Sports Group amid rumours that he’ll be replaced this summer.

“I spoke with the owners this week and they were very clear with where we’re at. Our relationship is fantastic. They’re as disappointed as we all are when we lose games but they understand the model that’s in place here. Both myself and the owners have always been in it for the long term and that remains the case,” he told the Liverpool ECHO with speculation surrounding his future at Anfield cranked up. “They also know I’m very ambitious and want to win but so do they. They have been very supportive to me since the day I walked in and nothing has changed on that. The owners have done remarkably well here. They saved the club initially, brought stability to it and they understand for it to progress and develop it’s about sticking with the plan and that’s something they are keen to do.”

A poor start to the season, coupled with a number of injuries have left Liverpool looking up the table for much of the campaign, and with only a handful of matches left, sitting seven points outside the top four. A disasterous exit from the FA Cup at the hands of relegation threatened Aston Villa last weekend has only furthered the notion that Rodgers is no longer the man for the job, but the vultures are only circling at this point as the Northern Irishman explained that this is part and parcel of the job.

“I was voted Manager of the Year last season. Then not long into this season I was deemed to be the next manager to be out of a job. That’s modern football for you. It makes you realise you’re at a huge club where every defeat is massive. You have to cope with that,” explained the Reds manager before starkly admitting he realizes his time on Merseyside may be drawing to an end. “My self-belief is intact. There’s no question about that. I believe 150% that I’m the right person to take the club forward. Listen, that (the sack) may come at some stage. I’m not sat here in a beautiful red comfy chair thinking I’m going to be here forever. That’s not the case.”
