With the end of the Premier League season leaving us with a serious drought of football, it’ll be nice to see the World Cup kick-off in a few weeks time. As much as we’re looking forward to it as fans, the players who are experiencing the worlds biggest tournament for the first time — like Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge — will be even more excited for it to get started.

“I’m looking forward to it, I can’t wait to get there, I’m excited by it all,” he told the assembled press. “I don’t feel any pressure in terms of the task ahead because we’ve prepared for this. When you are young you always want these moments. “This is my first World Cup and it’s a lot of the other players first World Cups. We’re just embracing it all, it’s not about feeling pressure.”

The 24-year old has made some serious waves at Liverpool this season alongside strike partner Luis Suarez with 21-league goals to his name as the Reds finished runners-up to eventual champions Manchester City and secured qualification for next season’s Champions League. The weight of expectation may be on Sturridge following his outstanding season, but he’s not about to take that into account.

“For me it’s just about playing my natural game and not worrying about scoring goals. When you put pressure on yourself sometimes they don’t come and you don’t perform as well as you’d like to” Sturridge continued. “We’re going to work hard, enjoy it, embrace the moment and not feel the pressure. We just want to go out there, play the way we play and try and do as well as we possibly can.”
