Before someone says “Slow news day?” we’d like to point out that yes, yes it is.

Not only has Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge been handed the coveted number 9 shirt for England, he’s also been handed a big bag full of money — or green peppers — for starring alongside Brazilian legend and noted shill Pele in a new ad for World Cup and Reds sponsor Subway restaurants.

The American sandwich chain, joined forces with the Anfield outfit back in April with a multi-year collaboration that will see the two work on a number of different projects together. This is the latest in a series of commercial ventures that has seen partnerships with Vauxhall, Garuda Indonesia and Dunkin’ Donuts take root since Fenway Sports Group took the reigns back in October, 2010.

With the two partnered up for years to come — and Sturridge’s star rising quickly — this is surely the first in a long line of cringe worthy commercials to come. Maybe next time Danny can teach Jared some of his signature dance moves…
