Ever since Liverpool striker Luis Suarez went under the knife to correct a knee problem, everyone and their mum is taking bets on whether or not he’ll be ready in time for the rapidly approaching World Cup in Brazil next month.
With kick-off on Uruguay’s first match against Costa Rica less than three weeks away, the 27-year old has all but been ruled out of La Celeste’s opener with respected national newspaper Ovacion painting a rather grim picture for the strikers future. Although he looks likely to miss out against the Central American minnows, he could very well make the second match against England — which is exactly what he told Three Lion’s fullback and Reds team-mate Glen Johnson.
The 29-year old, who is England’s only recognized right-back in Roy Hodgson’s squad, has been in touch with the Uruguayan post-operation and revealed that he expects to be fit to square off against his club-mate in Brazil. “I spoke to him in the week. He doesn’t think it’s that bad, so he thinks he’ll be OK” said the Reds fullback. “On a personal level, I don’t want to see him injured. I want him to be fit.”
Though it still seems like a bit of a stretch, Suarez does have an amazing knack for recovering quickly from injuries. Regardless, Johnson isn’t focusing on who they’ll be lining up against, instead preferring to keep his thoughts on his own team. “He’s a good lad and I get on well with him so, of course, I don’t want him to be injured” he continued, “but we’ve just got to focus on ourselves and let everybody else worry about the other teams.”
