Pepe Reina Set for Bayern Munich Switch
Ever since Pepe Reina’s loan spell at Napoli, rumours persisted that the Spanish ‘keeper was set to make his move to Italy permanent with the 31-year old seemingly at the end of his time at Liverpool.
With ex-Reds boss Rafa Benitez refusing to meet his £4mil release clause, Reina’s future remained in limbo for much of the summer with tentative links to the likes of AC Milan and Bayern Munich doing the rounds. Well, as far fetched as a move to the German giants may have sounded to begin with, it appears to be materializing quite quickly with the Bavarian club confirming that a £2.5mil fee has been agreed between the two sides for the want-away shot-stopper.
“The player will come to Munich in the next few days for a medical examination and to sign his contract” Bayern Munich’s chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge told their official website. “Pepe Reina was eager to come to Bayern Munich. He wanted to embark on this adventure even though he knows that, in Manuel Neuer, he has a keeper in front of him who, if nothing changes, will always remain the No1.”
Despite accepting an offer that’s lower than his asking price, the Spaniard’s departure is a tidy bit of business from the Reds. Considering his extraordinary wages and generally poor attitude towards the club these days, getting him off the books for a fee that even borders acceptable is an absolute win.
Being glad to see the back of him aside, Pepe has been a fantastic servant to Liverpool Football Club and we wish him all the best in Germany.
