VIDEO: Liverpool Decimate Dortmund at Anfied
In his post match press conference, Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp said that today was the “wrong day” to face Liverpool and he certainly wasn’t wrong as the Reds routed the German giants with four unanswered goals at Anfield.
Daniel Sturridge, an injury doubt after being sent home early from Liverpool’s tour of North America with a hamstring problem, was on hand to open the scoring after Philippe Coutinho’s magical pass sent the 24-year old bearing down on goal. A Steven Gerrard corner not long after found the head of Anfield débutante Dejan Lovren to power past Dortmund ‘keeper Mitchell Langerak to double-up the score. Coutinho made it three when he drove home a precise Raheem Sterling pass and a wonderful team move would cap off the day when Jordan Henderson’s picture perfect finish turned what looked like a textbook win into a rout.
“It was the wrong day and the wrong opponent for us in Liverpool,” Klopp told German media outlet Ruhr Nachrichten after the match. “The first two goals we conceded, we didn’t defend well. If you make mistakes like those we made, then you will lose against an opponent like Liverpool.”
With the new blood bedding in nicely, yesterday’s win was the perfect way to send the Reds into the new season. They kick it off next Sunday against Southampton at Anfield — be sure to pop in before then and check out the Season Preview and of course all the build-up to this highly anticipated meeting.
Decimate? Took out one in ten did they?
