Jose Enrique Facing Fight for Liverpool Place

Finally fit.

He was once a nailed on starter, but following the Alberto Moreno’s move from Sevilla to Liverpool, fullback Jose Enrique knows that it’s going to take something special to dislodge his young compatriot from the starting eleven.

After being sidelined for much of last season through injury, finding both competition and cover for the 28-year old became a high priority at Anfield. Although it took almost the entire summer to do it, the Reds brought in Moreno to provide it and following his encouraging displays against both Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur, it’s looking far more like Enrique will be providing cover for the upstart defender rather than the other way around — something he has absolutely no problems with.

“After so long out it was great to be back playing,” he told local media outlet the Liverpool ECHO after his quick cameo appearance against Spurs on Sunday. “The only problem was that once I got warm the game was finished! I know I have to go little by little and be patient.” There are still concerns that the defenders knee is quite up to snuff yet, but in the meantime, he’s enjoying watching the young Spaniard find his feet on Merseyside.

“Moreno did really well and scored an amazing goal. For me the best thing about it was the pressing to win the ball back. That was half of the goal. How he finished was unbelievable” he continued. “The most important thing is that we are a team. This is a team sport and we all have to fight to make this team better. Hopefully we can do even better than last season.”
