Liverpool Await Results of Steven Gerrard Scan

The long walk

Liverpool may have recorded a big win against Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday night, but it certainly came at a cost with Reds captain Steven Gerrard complaining of tightness in his hamstring before being replaced by Dejan Lovren.

The Anfield icon had scored from the penalty spot early in the half after Spurs fullback Danny Rose clattered Daniel Sturridge in the area with a poorly timed challenge, but Moussa Dembélé pulled the visitors level not long after when he bundled home Harry Kane’s cross. Liverpool went on to find the winner late on when substitutes Mario Balotelli and Adam Lallana combined to seal the three points, but it’s looking like they’re going to have a Gerrard shaped hole in midfield for a little while with assistant boss Colin Pascoe, speaking ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup fifth round meeting with Crystal Palace, confirming the 34-year is having a scan to discover the extent of the damage.

“Unfortunately he felt his hamstring towards the end of the game and he is having a scan this morning and we are just waiting for results to come back,” said the Welshman before saying that the fitness of Raheem Sterling, who missed the meeting with Spurs, is also a concern. “We are monitoring Raheem. He missed a game the other night but we will see how he is.”

While it’s expected that the 20-year old will come through alright before the trip to Selhurst Park, initial rumours have Gerrard missing up to the next three weeks — meaning matches with Southampton, Manchester City as well as the two-legged tie with Besiktas in the Europa League. Emre Can, who has been plying his trade as part of the Reds highly successful three man defensive unit, is widely expected to the pushed into midfield in the absence of both the Captain and Lucas, but upsetting a settled back-line is always a risk.
