Jordan Henderson Not Letting Contract Talks or Captaincy Speculation Distract Him

Heading into tomorrow’s meeting with Crystal Palace in the fifth round of the FA Cup, Liverpool vice-captain Jordan Henderson has revealed that he’s in no rush to sign a new deal at Anfield and if need be he’ll wait until the summer before putting pen to paper.
If you check with the punters in the know at the best sports betting guide, Henderson is without question the odds on favorite to take up the Liverpool captaincy when Steven Gerrard moves to the LA Galaxy this summer, but as time ticks down on his deal alternatives to the 24-year old midfielder are surely being batted around by the Reds hierarchy. While the former Sunderland man makes absolutely no indication that there’s any problem in negotiations or that he’s thinking about moving on there are worries about such a high profile player moving into the last 18-months of his contract.
Earlier in the week Gerrard called on the club to sort out not only Henderson’s contract, but also that of youngster Raheem Sterling. Despite being name-checked as an important player for the clubs future, Henderson is staying focused on helping the team and believes that Sterling is doing the same. The rest, he says, is up to the agents, the club and the manager to sort out.
“We’re just really focused on our football, and our agents will sort the other side of things out. Hopefully they can work something out soon, if not then we’ll just wait until the end of the season” said the Reds vice-captain when asked about signing a new deal at Anfield before going on to explain that he’s not losing sleep over whether or not he’ll become the next Liverpool captain. “To be honest I haven’t thought about it at all because I don’t want it to affect what I’m doing for the team. “It’s up to the manager next season to choose who he thinks is right to be captain, but my focus is on helping the team to be successful this season, and that means winning trophies, trying to get into the top four and winning as many games as we can. At the end of the season we’ll see where were at.”
