Martin Skrtel Signs Liverpool Contract Extension
After the 3-0 defeat at the Hawthorns this weekend, the News Desk need a bit of cheering up and the fax machine was here to do just that. It’s now been confirmed that Martin Skrtel has put the speculation surrounding his future to rest and signed a long-term contract extension. Details surrounding the agreement are sparse at the moment, but that hardly matters when it comes to one half of our all important defensive pairing. Manchester City was reportedly sniffing around the big Slovakian earlier in the transfer window and has now turned their attention to another Liverpool star, Daniel Agger, as they look to shore up their defensive options. After arriving in a £6.5mil deal from Zenit St Petersburg in 2008, Skrtel forced his way into the squad with some standout displays and was the Reds player of the season last year. Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers will be looking for a diversion after opening day went down the tubes, and locking down Skrtel will be a welcome distraction until the Europa League match with Hearts on Thursday.
