Allen, Sakho and Henderson All Crocked as Injury Crisis Thickens
It’s all going from bad to worse as Liverpool’s injury woes just keep on coming; the Reds are already without skipper Steven Gerrard, Daniel Sturridge, Jose Enrique and Jon Flanagan, but they may be adding another three names to the list after three matches in eight days left an already thin squad looking, well, thinner.
Although the Liverpool midfield was one of the stars of the show as Brendan Rodgers side narrowly missed out on a share of the spoils at the Etihad stadium, the trio of Jordan Henderson, Lucas and Joe Allen looked ragged in yesterdays 2-1 loss to Chelsea and the Welshman would be substituted on the hour with what looked to be a recurrence of a groin problem he suffered back in September.
The midfielder has shown hints of the kind of player he looked to be when he followed Rodgers from Swansea City to Liverpool, but he’s been injury prone from the word GO and this latest problem will just set him back that much more. Thankfully, Steven Gerrard should be fit to make a return on Wednesday, but that’s not going to help all that much should Jordan Henderson be on the treatment table as well.
The England man completed the whole 90-minutes despite taking a terribly late tackle to the knee from Samuel Eto’o in the opening minutes, but the Liverpool boss revealed that both of them were playing with injuries. “Joe Allen and Jordan Henderson probably played at 70 per cent, they were both injured. Joe had an injection to try to quash the pain in his abductor” he said.”Eventually when that wore off, it went really. We’ll see how long that will be. We’ll obviously assess Jordan as well.”
If problems in our already troubled midfield wasn’t bad enough, in the closing minutes of yesterdays defeat in London, Mamadou Sakho pulled up with a hamstring problem and had to be replaced by Kolo Toure. “Sakho is his hamstring, so he will probably be a bit of time – we’ll find out tomorrow,” conceded the Reds boss. Should the Frenchman be out for any significant length of time, any thoughts of Daniel Agger heading off to Napoli on loan will be quickly quashed.
