Jon Flanagan Targets Aston Villa Clash For Injury Return

Last week there was news that Liverpool fullback Jon Flanagan was on the verge of signing a new contract at Anfield and now he’s set to follow up his proposed new deal with a return to the squad as he battles back from a injury he picked up during pre-season.
The local lad impressed on both flanks last season as he stood in for Jose Enrique and Glen Johnson when called upon. His work-rate has garnered praise from both the fans and Reds boss Brendan Rodgers alike and has set him up for a new deal at the only club he’s ever wanted to play for. With an improved contract on the table, he’s now set to hand his manager a selection problem with news that he should be fit by the time Aston Villa visit Anfield on September 13th.
I don’t think it will be too long now and I think I should be back after the international break if all goes well,” Flanagan told the official website. “It has been frustrating for me but I can’t dwell on it. It was tough to pick up the injury in pre-season but I’ve just got to forget about that now and push on.”
Liverpool brought in two fullbacks during the transfer window and both Alberto Moreno and compatriot Javier Manquillo have impressed during the Reds first three matches. Despite the step-up in competition, Flanagan is determined to give them a run for their money. “It’s going to be tough but I’m more determined than ever. It’s a massive season for me and I just can’t wait to get back now” he continued. “There’s a lot more competition for places, which is good for us. The manager has strengthened the squad with the new signings, so I’ve got to continue to work hard and then hopefully get a chance.”
