Raheem Sterling Close to New Reds Deal

Don’t panic

Amid rumoured interest from a number of big-spending European clubs, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that not only are the club in talks with winger Raheem Sterling over a new contract, but that the youngster is happy at Anfield and focused on his football.

“It is not a big issue for us. Ian Ayre has spoken to his representatives and is quite relaxed. The club is dealing with the agent so everything is calm” said the Northern Irishman. “The boy is remarkably happy here and there are no secondary thoughts about anything else other than continuing to play for Liverpool. His representatives know that and we as a club respect that so that will get sorted out with time.”

Sterling has been linked with a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid, but the news that oil-rich French billionaire’s Paris St. Germain are also interested in the youngster has been met with a mix of trepidation and resignation — if we don’t sign him up for the long term right now, we could very well lose him in the future.

With highly rated Reds striker Daniel Sturridge committing himself to the cause for the next five years, Liverpool could see this as a leg-up in contract talks with the 19-year old. The two have combined well for both the Anfield outfit and the English national team during their time together. While the commitment of Sturridge isn’t likely to be a defining factor in Sterling’s decision, having a world class player like him sign on for the long term certainly won’t hurt.
